Accelerated erosion - increased rate of soil erosion by activities performed by humans.

Annual species of vegetation - they grow one year, seed out and then die. The root system is minimal since they are not alive long. The seeds may come back but you can not count on that. They are considered temporary cover.

ASTM - American Society for Testing and Materials - They set the standards on how to test the effectiveness of materials. They provide a specification for trenching installation of silt fence.

BFM - Bonded Fiber Matrix - This is a heavy and thick mulch application used on steep slopes and high erosion areas.

BMP - Best Management Practice - Any measure, device or practice used to reduce or eliminate the amount of erosion or sediment release from a construction site.

Bypass - This is an intentional diversion of a waste stream from any portion of a treatment facility.

CFR - Code of Federal Regulations - A codification of the general and permanent rules published in the Federal Register by Executive departments and agencies.

CGP - Construction General Permit - This is an umbrella permit that covers all land disturbance that fits the specific criteria outlined in the permit.

Channel or stream bank erosion - When increased volume and velocity of stormwater flows wear away the channel sides.

CWA - Clean Water Act - The regulation governing the NPDES permits

CZMA - Coastal Zone Management Act - Regulation protecting the coastal zone areas of the United States

Detention - Pond that detains the water for a designed time frame and allows for a slow release over time. During non-storm events, these ponds are dry and should be well vegetated.

ECTC - Erosion Control Technology Council - test and set specifications for rolled erosion control products

ECTC - Erosion Control Technology Council - They provide specifications for rolled erosion control products

EPA - Environmental Protection Agency - The agency that oversees the NPDES permits

Erosion - the process by which soil particles are dislodged and moved by water or wind.

Flocculate - The reaction with long chain polymer that causes soil particles to attract and clump together for faster settling.

Gully erosion - These are deep channels formed from concentrated stormwater flow. They can not be removed or filled with simple plowing techniques.

IP - Individual Permit - Permit written specifically for one construction project.

MS4 - Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System - Entity that controls a storm sewer system and is regulated under the Clean Water Act

MSDS - Material Safety Data Sheet - These provide health and safety information for specific chemicals on how poisonous they are, how they can affect humans, animals and the environment, and how the product should be cleaned up and disposed of if it spilled.

NOI - Notice of Intent - This is the permit application that is filled out and submitted to the appropriate agency so your construction project is covered under the Construction General Permit.

NOT - Notice of Termination - form filled out and submitted to the appropriate agency to release the permit holder from coverage under the general permit.

NPDES - National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System - a permit regulated by the Clean Water Act

NRCS - Natural Resources Conservation Service - They provide soil surveys by county.

NURP - Nationwide Urban Runoff Program - study performed by EPA in the 1980's

Organic matter - Decomposed vegetable and animal matter in the soil.

Perennial species - They grow, establish and spread. They have an extensive root system that maintains their existence. They come back each year and are considered permanent.

Permit Authorization - The letter you receive after submitting the NOI or permit application to the appropriate agency for NPDES permit coverage. Your construction site is assigned a specific site permit number.

POTW - Public Owned Treatment Works - A device or system for the treatment of pollutants owned by the State or any political subdivision such as a municipality.

Retention - Ponds that retain or hold water. They are designed for post construction stormwater management but can be used as a sediment basin during construction. If so, they must be designed for a specific amount of sediment storage and cleaned out when necessary and after the construction project is complete.

Rhizomatous - below-ground shoots

Rill erosion - Created when shallow sheet flow concentrates in low areas and creates shallow grooves or channels of concentrated flow. Rills are only deep enough that they can be removed or filled by plowing the area.

Saltation - The rolling and bouncing of heavier particles along the soil surface. This is a type of wind erosion.

Sediment - the transportation of soil particles mostly suspended in flowing water after they have become dislodged due to the erosion process.

Sedimentation - The deposition of dislodged soil particles when there is not enough energy to hold them in suspension and keep them moving in the stormwater flow.

Sheet erosion - Caused by shallow flowing water over the surface of the soil.

SHPO - State Historic Preservation Office - Agency that protects historical properties

SIC - Standard Industrial Classification - System used to classify types of industrial activities.

Splash erosion - Caused by raindrop impact on unprotected soil.

Stoloniferous - above-ground shoots

Surface creep - Larger soil particles roll and slide along the surface of the soil. This is a type of wind erosion.

Suspension - Smaller soil particles are carried in the air above the ground. This is a type of wind erosion.

Swale - Ditch or channel with concentrated flows

SWPPP - Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan - Plan designed to treat stormwater runoff from a construction site. A SWPPP is a requirement of the NPDES permit program.

T&E - Threatened and Endangered Species - Species listed by the US Fish and Wildlife that are protected

Tillers - shoots that form from the buds at the leaf base

TMDL - Total Maximum Daily Load - The total amount of a given pollutant that can enter a waterway and not violate a water quality standard.

Topography - Vertical elevation of the earth's surface

Treated stormwater - It is stormwater that has been treated by a device, product or system to reduce the pollutants in it before it flows off the permitted site.

TRM - Turf Reinforcement Mat - permanent type of rolled erosion control products

Upset - This is en exceptional incident in which there is unintentional and temporary noncompliance because of factors outside your control.

USGS - United States Geological Survey - They provide topographic maps (7.5 minute quadrangle) of the United States

Weir - A small rock dam used to direct water flow
